| This is what osteosarcoma looks like. The photo on the left is a normal humerus (top bone in the front leg). The photo on the right shows Oatmeal's osteosarcoma from the middle to near the top. The mottled middle and the less-defined edges are typical of the disease.
Our friend Praveen's dog Daisy had osteosarcoma in a rear leg. Here are her x-rays. Sadly, a year later Oatmeal developed osteosarcoma in her left humerus. We accidentally took a picture of it on 1/27/04 when we were checking her lungs for metastases.
We have checked this tumor monthly since we found it. It was stable for three months, but on May 4, we found the tumor had begun to change and the edge of her bone is deteriorating. Here is an x-ray taken on May 7, 2004.
After three radiation treatments in May, Oatmeal's left humerus was pain free. However, within two months she stopped putting weight on her right rear leg. Upon examination, we found she had a new tumor in her proximal femur (top of the bone in the rear leg). This image, taken on July 7, 2004, shows the mottled middle typical of the disease:
We also found that Oatmeal's cancer had metastasized to her lungs:
