Jazz, Hope, and Boston normally don't spend much time
getting ready to go out. On Thursday, the extra effort paid off when
the three dogs took home the grand prize at the second annual Fun Dog Show
at the Marina Place assisted living facility.
The dogs sported sequined aquamarine tutus, while their
owner, Kristen Kames, modeled a matching evening gown.
Kames, of Marshfield, says her dogs enjoy showing off
their haute couture.
"They like to look pretty, so I dress them
up," she said. "They all sit in a line to wait to get
dressed."
About 25 dogs paraded in front of two judges and the
residents of Marina Place, competing for prizes in categories including
best dressed, waggiest tail, and shortest legs.
Master of ceremonies CoCo, attired in his best formal
wear, lent an air of dignity to the proceedings.
First prize for best dressed went to a 14-year-old shih-tzu
named Dusty, who trotted by the judges in a cowboy hat and bandanna.
"I saw the cowboy hat and said 'this is perfect for
this kind of setting,'" said Dusty's owner, Joan Gillen of North
Weymouth. "It's her first dog show, and she got first
prize."
The Quincy Animal Shelter co-sponsored the show, with
proceeds going to the Shelter. Several of the dogs in the show had
been adopted from shelters, including Oatmeal, a greyhound who used to
race.
A jaunty flowered hat and veil perched atop her head as
she sleekly strode past the judges.
"I have all sorts of silly costumes for them,"
said Oatmeal's owner, Sarah Norton, marketing director for the Quincy
Animal Shelter. Norton owns three greyhounds, all former racing
dogs.
"We ask people to dress up their pets to make it
especially amusing for the residents," said Elizabeth Westley,
director of community relations at Marina Place.
"It's just a wonderful opportunity for them to
experience some of this affection," she said. "The
residents get a good chuckle out of it."
