Frequently asked questions

Q. Are all dogs at Dewey Beach retired racers?

A. No. About 95 percent of the dogs are retired racers. Some dogs never make it to the track for various reasons, and American Kennel Club (show) dogs are also welcomed. AKC dogs make up only about 300 of the approximately 35,000 greyhounds born in the US each year.

Q. How can 2,000 dogs descend on a community and not cause sanitation problems?

A. The Greyhound Project arranges for 10,000 dog refuse bags to be distributed with Dewey registration materials. Dewey Beach also provides a town truck that cruises the beach asking those with full bags if they'd like to make a deposit.

Q. Where do all those dogs stay?

A. Every year more hotels and real estate groups open new doors to the hounds. In addition to more than 60 motels, inns, and bed and breakfasts, the local campground and many private homeowners have welcomed the Greyhound supporters.

According to Atlantic Budget Inn General Manager D. J. Hill, "We've sold out all 97 rooms the past four years, and we've never had any damage from the dogs.  None.  Greyhounds are especially clean and gentle, and I find the owners to be a group of compassionate people."

Q. What's it like to actually be there?

A. The fun really begins on the journey. While driving down the NJ Turnpike or the Garden State Parkway from the Northeast, Greyhounds populate every rest area. Pointy noses can be spotted in many of the vehicles on the highway, as well as on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. Once you arrive, they are everywhere you turn. At one point during the 1999 event, there were Greyhounds along the beach as far as you could see, and a school of dolphins accompanied them just a few feet away. The entire weekend is an emotional experience not to be missed.
